The Black Angels

Directions To See A Ghost
[Light in the Attic/May 19]
The Black Angels’ second full-length harkens back to the 60s even moreso than their first (which I honestly didn’t think was possible), resulting in an undeniably amazing trip through a dreamed-up-decade of faux Vietnams and LSD and Woodstocks. Alex Maas’s androgynous, neo-Jefferson Airplane vocal stylings are drenched in retro-60s psychedelia and enamored with hallucinatory artifacts, as if his voice alone is creating a sort of time loop between then and now. Yet, as much flower-power decade nostalgia The Black Angels possess, they still manage to sound simultaneously modern, which gives them resonance and reason to look back on the past and recreate it on their terms.

High point: Never/Ever

RIYL: The Warlocks, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Jefferson Airplane, Janis Joplin, 13th Floor Elevators, Black Mountain

This album is amazing. I always wondered if they would follow up passover and how. but this album takes the original sound down a dark and dangerous path.

As an aside the first time i heard the black angels was on radio here but i missed the artist when it was back announced. It is the only time i’ve contacted a radio station to find out the name of a song and the next day when the radio dj played it again and said it was for me i wasn’t listening so i missed it again. luckily my bro’ was and gave me the name of the band. A boring but true story.
